Abstract: The Tertiary magmatism in cerro Serrucho, previously known as "Mollelitense" is represented by three non-formal units: Arroyo Serrucho Stock (SAS), Hypabyssal Related Bodies (CHR) and Related Vulcanites (VR). All of them are emplaced in the Jurassic sedimentary sequence (Puchenque Formation), in the Southern Mendoza scope of the Neuquen basin. The three units can be differentiated from the geologic, petrographic, geochemichal, isotopic and geochronologic point of view. The Arroyo Serrucho Stock (SAS) is a composed, epizonal body, asymetrically zoned. Five facies have been differentiated : a) Quartz- Monzonite facies; b) Granodioritic Facies A, medium and coarse grained; c) Granodioritic Facies B, fine to medium grained; d) Mixing Facies and e) Granophyric Facies. The SAS is predominantely peraluminous, calc-alkaline, belonging to the high-K, high Ba-Sr granite group. The compositional trends may be explained by in-situ fractional crystallization. The most probable source is the upper mantle-lower crust LIL-enriched by the subducted plate. During its emplacement, a water-rock interaction revealed by the oxygen and hydrogen isotopes can be postulated. The cooling age is Late Miocene (9,5 ñ 0,5 Ma); it is considered simultaneous with the emplacement. Dyke propagation, associated with faulting related with regional stress field is considered the most suitable way for ascent and emplacement in this case. The Hypabyssal Related Bodies (CHR) are dykes, laccoliths and sills of rhyolitic composition, associated in space with the SAS. There is a measurable time interval between the emplecement of SAS and CHR. The CHR are peraluminous and calc-alkaline. The absolute age is Upper Miocene (7,5+- 1 Ma). They have more evidences of crustal contamination, but it is not very relevant and is related with the more surficial emplacement. The geochemical pattern is similar to the SAS pattern, with lesser normalized abundances. The CHR are not an isolate episode; they are probably a group of events from the same source with different degrees of evolution. The mineral resources of the area are probably related with the interaction and remobilization by meteoric waters, plenty of salts, and the CHR. The related vulcanites (VR) are andesites and dacites, calc-alkaline and metaaluminous. They are the less extendedt episode, and the last one. Its absolute age is Later Miocene-Early Pliocene (4,8+- 1 My). The source for the Tertiary magmatism has been constant during the time span considered. Is similar to the present arc and retro-arc volcanism source. Such an homogeneous source can be represented only for the subducted mantle wedge, modified with LIL enrichment by the subducted plate.

Abstract: A petrological and geochemical study of the Lower Cretaceous basic volcanism of the Sierra Chica of Córdoba has been done. It belongs to a volcanic-sedimentary complex, which defines a synrift fill in small half-grabens within a transtensional basin, due to tectonics which led to Gondwana break-up. In the different areas four groups of volcanic rocks were recognized from the major elements: ankaratrites, basanites, alkaline basalt - trachyphonolite/trachyte suite and transitional basalt - latibasalt suite. The general character of this volcanism is potassic transitional to potassic. Alkalinityis moderate, according to the absence of peralkaline types. Geochemical characteristics, with previous paleomagnetic data. indicate that lavas are distributed diachronically throughout the whole succession of the north of Sierra de los Cóndores, with lateral variations between the localities. So that the distinction of two volcanic cycles as was previously proposed by other authors, is not supported in this work. The Lower Cretaceous basin of Sierra Chica is a low volcanicity rift type, with strombolian activity. Several peperite type breccias were formed where the sedimentation was more important. Freatomagmatic events were very scarce. Instead, viscous mass flows, as debris flows, were frequent in the area. Al2O3 contents and normative compositions of the primary type magmas point out that melting took place under 35-70 km (13-18 kb). Negative anomalies in K and Rb suggest phlogopite or amphibole as a residual phase in the garnet bearing mantle source. Primary type magmas of the different groups also have diverse Th/La, La/Ta and La/Nb ratios and Zr, Hf and LREE contents. Melting degrees (5 - 7%) from an enriched mantle source (with residual phlogopite) are in accordance with the peripherical position related to the great thermal anomaly (from the residual Geoid) which triggered the voluminous flood tholeiites of Parana. Eastern outcropts of Sierra Chica, of more frequently transitional character, could represent slightly higher melting degrees than the western ones; nevertheless, certain anomalies in trace element compositions point out heterogeneities in the mantle source. Also, a diverse volatile content (H2O,C02) could have favoured magmas with distinct silica saturation, particularly where coexistence of those products has taken place. Trace element diagrams suggest that the more evolved rocks (volumetrically subordinated) were not genetically linked to the primitive magmas by fractional crystallization, so that they must have evolved from diverse parental ones. Likewise, textures involving resorption and reaction with the liquid showed by some clinopyroxene and plagioclase phenocrysts, specially from the more evolved rocks, and the slight but rather general increase in the Mg contents of clinopyroxene from the rim of the phenocrysts to the microlites of the groundmass, indicate frequent recharge with more primitive magmas. This also must have promoted mixing between diverse batches, so that an open-system behaviour is characterized, in which crustal contamination must have also taken part, though it does not seem to have been significant from the geochemical data. Differentiation processes would have taken place under low pressure, in accordance with Al^VIof the clinopyroxene phenocrysts. From the comparison with other alkaline localities also peripherical respect to Parana flood basalts, the Sierra Chica volcanism is coeval and lithologically similar to that of central-eastern Paraguay, also of potassic character. Nevertheless, while basic rocks from Córdoba are high-Ti, those from Paraguay are low-Ti and show striking Ta-Nb-Ti anomalies. The magmas of Sierra Chica are comparable hence to the younger ones from southeastern Brazil, for example those from Alto Paranaíba, though these have higher LILE, LREE contents and (La/Yb)n ratios, consistent with the ultrapotassic rocks that prevail in that area. Chemical similarities reflect therefore analogies between both sources, that could be due to resemblances in the metasomatic events. While low-Ti magmas reflect a metasomatic event during the Late Archean to the Middle Proterozoic in the Rio de la Plata craton, high-Ti ones represent a mantle enrichment episode that occurred in Middle to Late Proterozoic related to mobile belts, according to the model ages obtained by other authors. Hence, it seems probable that mantle beneth Sierra Chica, as that of Alto Paranalba, must have verified metasomatism during Brasiliano orogeny. The presence of low-Ti flood basalts and low-Ti potassic magmas from Paraguay, to the east and northeast of Córdoba, seems therefore to reflect the transition from the oldest to the younger metasomatic events, consistent with terrane accretion in the western margin of Gondwana. Tectonic models geologically supported by the presence of Cambrian calcalkaline granitos in the region, do no correlate with Cretaceous alkaline Chemistry. Ba/Nb vs. La/Nb, Ta/Yb vs. Th/Yb, Ba/La ratios and the absence of a Nb-Ta depletion on a normalized multielement plot do not reveal metasomatism by fluids or melts derived from a downgoing slab in the past. It seems probable that melting must have affected portions of the mantle that were not contaminated by the subduction processes. This is consistent with the heterogeneous nature of the lithospheric mantle, whose non-convective geodynamics, would have preserved the heterogeneities over long periods of the geological time.

Abstract: Geochemistry of fluids (gases and water) is a discipline of great importance in the study of active volcanoes, allowing to determine the characteristics of shallow magmatic bodies, their relationship with the deep environment of magma generation, and to identify changes on the system behavior. In a quiescent volcano, fluid circulation continues through the fracture system, interacting with meteoric waters and generating hydrothermal ground waters, fumaroles, etc. System disturbances are expressed by different kind of signals that involve changes on chemical composition of the fluids reaching at surface. Copahue volcano is the main active center of the Copahue-Caviahue Volcanic Complex (CVCC), whose dynamic and emissions are controlled by the development of an important volcanicmagmatic- hydrothermal system. Within this complex several geothermal areas are recognized, characterized by gas emissions and thermal waters. Fluid researches play a crucial role in characterizing and understanding the dynamic of these systems. This PhD thesis aims to characterize volcanic and hydrothermal fluid emissions of CVCC, and to evaluate the applicability of the acquire data for monitoring purposes. In particular this work tries to determine the origin and nature of fluid components from the discharges, the processes that control their composition, also to recognize the different subsystems in the volcanic-magmatic-hydrothermal general system and to identify the interaction between them. Finally, this work seeks to determine a pattern of behavior of the system in order to detect anomalies associated with system disturbances, validate it by crosschecking with identified signals from other disciplines, and establish a background for future monitoring works. This research was carried out by direct sampling of fluids (gases and waters), and determining the chemical (organic and inorganic) and isotopic composition. The evaluation of gas composition shows a significant magmatic component feeding the emissions, although these conditions are controlled by reduced conditions determined by a thick hydrothermal aquifer. The most important acidic species are CO2 and H2S, the C/S ratio allow us to determine higher acidic areas near the volcano edifice. Generally, the emissions are characterized by high relative values of CH4, H2, alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons, which is consistent with the hydrothermal domain. A strong decrease in N2/He was detected after the 2000 eruption. This variation together with the high 3He/4He ratio registered at this area (the highest registered on the Andes until present) and δ13C-CO2 values, suggest an active connection between the shallow andesitic magma chamber and the deep magmatic-mantle system. An injection of deep non-evolved magmatic fluids could have triggered the eruptive activity on 2000. According to liquid phase emissions, different subsystems were defined: waters from volcanic-hydrologic system (SVH) characterized by high acidity and low SO4/Cl values; steam heated waters (ACV) with high acidity and high SO4/Cl values; and snow melted waters (AD) with neutral characteristics. SVH waters have high relative values of F, showing that they act as condensers for volcanic gases. Stable isotopes (δ18O and δ2H) point out magmatic waters contribution on SVH. ACD waters are enriched in NH4, indicating a strong control on composition from the subsurface hydrothermal system. The study performed on the SVH system allow us to identified a seasonal behavior significantly affected during the thermal anomalous period (AT), registered by a strong decrease in temperature from the crater lake in the middle of 2004. This event was interpreted to be caused by sealing of the fracture system that feeds the Crater Lake, due to oversaturation as a consequence of the uprising of highly-concentrated (brines) deep fluids. This anomaly was also registered by a particular seismic activity and a deflation period. This mechanism is considered to be responsible for the phreatic events that took place on CVCC during 90’s. A conceptual geochemical model for the general volcanic-magmatic-hydrothermal system was constructed from the information obtained by this research. This work establishes the principles for future geochemical monitoring at Copahue and other active volcanic systems from the Andes.
