Abstract: Seven species of Tyrannidae from NE Argentina were cytogenetically studied. The chromosome number and basic morphology of Myiarchusferox (2n=76), Tyrannus savana (2n=78), and Elaenia parvirostris (2n=78) are described for tbe first time, while Pitangus sulphuratus (2n=78), Tyrannus melancholicus (2n=78), Platyrinchus mystaceus (2n=60) and Cnemotriccusfuscatus (2n=84) are re-analyzed. The adult specimens were captured witb mist nets and chromosome preparations were stained from embryonic cells and bone marrow. P. mystaceus presents a low diploid number for its class (2n=60) with predominance of biarmed chromosomes. M. ferox has a W chromosome proportionally bigger tban usual for Passeriformes. T. savana and T. melancholicus show differences only at the second chromosomic pair and at Z chromosome. Adiscrepancy with previous data is shown for P. sulphuratus (2n= 78) versus tbe previous report (2n=68).

Abstract: We assessed the performance of strip transects and fixed-radius point counts with respect to their accuracy to estimate bird abundances and commuunity attributes (diversity, richness, eveness) in the semiarid forests of Santiago del Estero province, Argentina. The study was carried out in a secondary forest and in a sector of the same forest where shrubs were removed. We instaled 4 transects and 4 points in each habitat. Our results showed that: 1) estimations of species richness by the point method were lower than by the transect method (P < 0.05), even though there were not significant differences in either diversity or evenness (P=0.25 and P=0.56, respectively); 2) there was a positive correlation between bird abundances estimated by both methods in each habitat (P < O.OI), and 3) there were not significant differences between methods in their accuracy to estimate bird abundances, recorded by means of the coefficient of variation (CV%). We conclude that, even though both methods showed similar performances, the point method has in our case some advantages over the transects, since they are less difficult to allocate in the study area and do not demand to keep a constant pace in a rugged and scrubby terrain, as the transect method does. The lower species richness detected by the point method could be sol ved by increasing replicates, as well as by counting birds which are out of the fixed radius.
Abstract: We report the first record on the nesting of the White-naped Xenopsaris (Xenopsaris albinucha) for Buenos Aires Province. The nestling are described and commented. The mouth color is pink, a rare characteristic in the suboscines.
Abstract: The avian community structure of a Bolivian savanna on the edge of the Cerrado ecosystem was studied during August and September 1994, using line-transects. The avifauna of two habitats, wet campo and dense campo, is described in detail. A third habitat, wooded savanna, is identified, but only briefly described due to limited survey effort. The diversity of these habitats is compared to data from other tropical studies. Areas of wet campo contained the greatest density of birds, but were characterized by a relatively simple bird community, formed prirnari1y of granivorous, ground-gleaning species. Dense campo habitats, characterised by greater vegetation cover, supported a higher diversity of foraging guilds, including frugivores, insectivores and omnivores, exhibiting a variety of foraging strata and behaviours. Consequently, this habitat contained the greatest number of species. Bird species diversity was therefore re1ated to vegetation structure and niche availability.
Abstract: In this paper we analyzed the carriage of pathogens by Kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) in a portion of the Patagonian coast. During one year (1995-96), 100 individual s of different sex and age class were caught at fisheries tip of Puerto Deseado. Faecal samples were obtained from individual birds by cloacal swab and sex was determined at laboratory by dissection. We registered at least ten species of bacteria of eight genus (Escherichia, Proteus, Citrobacter, Salmonella, Hafnia, Shigella, Enterobacter and Yersinia), using standard biochemical technics. There were no differences in carriage rates between sexes and age classes. Camage rates were similar over almost all year, but Citrobacter was more abundant during Spring and Proteus during Spring and Summer. Salmonella typhimurium represents the more risky species for cattle and humans and it was found during most of the year. Despite this study was not focused to investigate the infection rates in humans or cattle, the abundance of kelp gulls, its pattems of feeding and movements, the relative location of the city (between fisheries tip and breeding areas), makes the species a very likely candidate for a pathogens vector.
Abstract: I present data on nesting of four little-known raptors: Chondrohierax uncinatus, Buteogallus urubitinga, Busarellus nigricollis and Falco rufigularis, of the Chaco Oriental of Formosa province, at the southern extreme of its distribution. I provide information on date, location, size, materials, contents of the nests and food habits of nesting and adults.
Abstract: We present new dat on nesting of 12 bird species of the Yungas (montane forests ) of Salta and Jujuy provinces. We provide information on date, location, size, materials and contents of the nests. The nest and eggs of Atlapetes torquatus, apparently unknown, are described. Most avian species bred in the wet season, but Amazilia chionogaster nested in the dry season.
Abstract: Literature reports indicate that Carduelis magellanica inhabits semiopen or cultivated areas with scattered trees, feeding mostiy on Asteraceae seeds. In this paper we provide a list of 10 non-Asteraceae plants consumed by this cardueline finch in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The extended fruit availability (from March to December) of one of them (Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Oleaceae), a widespread exotic street tree, probably explains why the Hooded Siskin is fairly common in Buenos Aires city.
Resumen: Two specimens of Oceanites gracilis collected in El Bolsón, west Río Negro province, Argentina, in February 1972 and November 1983, represent the first records of the species in Argentina. These specimens, collected 950 km south of the known range, are suspected to originate accidentally from the Pacific Ocean in southern Chile, by influence of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and 'classic' low pressure, combined with strong fronts, forcing the birds to cross low Andean passes.
Abstract: In this paper we provide records of forest birds obtained during several surveys carried out in the mountains of Catamarca Province, Argentina, from 1981 to 1991. Thirty seven species are listed inc1uding 10calities, date and number of birds recorded. Catamarca province, at the southern end of the Yungas, contains about 63 % of the forest birds found further north in Tucumán. We also indicate the possible ways of bird colonization of these forests.
